The Bump on a Log

There are some things in life that are just plain useless.  We have a lot of rather negative expressions to help point out just how useless some things are.  I have been told, usually by my Father, "You are sitting there like a bump on a log."    At the time, I knew what he was talking about.  I wasn't doing anything and probably wasn't going to do anything but was just sitting there.  When you think about it, a bump on a log doesn't give the idea of accomplishing much in this world.  We have a lot of words in our language that point out a lack of productivity such as a "hair brained idea."  Now that doesn't show much promise either.  On the other hand, there are a lot of expressions from the Bible that give us hope and promise of things that are taking place in the world today.  Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the bible, gives us a lot of expressions about the Word of God.  One of my favorites is the following verse.   Psalm 119:105 says, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
I have often remarked how a light is used in the dark when moving about and how it illuminates around your feet and then in a long distance look down the path.  God's Word works in both situations.  the Scriptures give us the proper course for each footstep as we go through life and the longer look is also provided whether it be heaven and the course on how to get there or whether it be just the view down the road of life.  Things don't always go the way we suppose they are going to go and surprises come upon us that are not what we expected to find.  God's Word will always give us the solution and the comfort to endure these times of depression, discouragement and danger.  Our lives seem to never be free from the dangers that are around us.  I have a blog and it is entitled, "Encouragement on the Road of Life." I chose that title, because we need to be encouraged from time to time.  I need to find encouragement when things come against me and I can find that encouragement in the Word of God in every situation.  This is one good reason whey it is good for us to memorize Scripture.  We might know of a general thought or idea, but at times, we need the verse to help us through the time of trouble.  We use First Corinthians 10:13 to cover a lot of difficulties but there are other times when we need a specific word to help us.  It might be the passage that says, "I will never leave you...." Or it might be, "Cast your cares upon Him."  It might also be that passage that says that He will complete the work, or supply your need, or that He will come again.  So, if you find that you are just sitting there like a bump on a log, open your Bible and read a portion today, and the next day, and the next day also.  Praise God today that He has given us His Word as a Lamp unto our feet and a Light unto our path.
